Someone Asked a Question

Someone asked a question, why do you sing? When you lift your hands to Jesus, What do you really mean? Someone may be wondering, when you sing your song, at times you may be crying and nothings even wrong. I sing because I am happy, I sing because I am free. His eye is on the sparrow and I know he watches me. -Kirk Franklin

This song is on my mind today. I am not sure how everyone else is made up but I know me. Sometimes I get so busy and my heart feels so hard. I will have a task at hand and I do it with all of my might. I put emotions/feelings on the back burner to get through what I need to do. This is a technique I subconsciously learned to do because I am such an emotional person.

However, I can never be in the presence of God and not be emotional. I used to hate it that I cried, just about every time I prayed. I did not want people to think something was always wrong. Today I am impressed in my spirit that putting emphasis on what other people think all the time is a joy thief. I absolutely love the Word of God. Reading the words edify my soul. They bring peace, stability and understanding to my mind. I truly could not make it without His Word. However, do I use His Word as a temporary fix for my emotional spirit at that very moment or do I understand His Word is settled in Heaven? Nothing can or will change the Word of God.

The following passage pricks my heart when I go back and read it. Luke 3 24:28-31   “By this time they were nearing Emmaus and the end of their journey.  Jesus acted as if he were going on, but they begged him, Stay the night with us, since it is getting late.  So he went home with them.  As they sat down to eat, he took the bread and blessed it.  Then he broke it and gave it to them.  Suddenly, their eyes were opened, and they recognized him . And at that moment he disappeared!  They said to each other, Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?””

These guys were followers of Jesus. They spent days upon days following Jesus, listening to His teachings, learning of His ways and receiving insight in regards to the future. However, even after all of this, when Jesus was crucified, doubt set in their hearts. They begin to allow fear to blind their eyes, fog their thinking. These guys left the other apostles and headed in a different direction. If you allow fear to lead your life, it will lead you in the wrong direction. But, on their journey a man showed up, walked with them, talked with them once again. At the end of the journey they asked this man, whom they didn’t recognize to stay and eat with them. The man was Jesus. As he broke bread, their eyes were opened and they once again recognized Him. “They said to each other, Didn’t our hearts burn within us as he talked with us on the road and explained the Scriptures to us?” What a powerful statement, “didn’t our hearts burn within us?”

Does scripture, the written Words of God, burn within us as we read them? Do we really believe and understand these Words are not circumstantial, they are not based on our pedigree, specific past, specific present…..but these words are given to all who are called by God as a roadmap for our lives. We do not have to walk around in fear, flee in a different direction, or bow our heads in shame if we believe. If those Words Jesus spoke burn within our hearts. They aren’t there as a pill for a specific crisis but they are there as an everyday guide and they are there for YOU. When we truly write these words on our hearts, tie them around our neck they will burn within us. That is why it is so important to study the word of God. Have you ever tied a ribbon around your finger so you wouldn’t forget something? Memorizing, believing and applying scripture is kind of like that. You don’t forget the string is there, it nudges you, it gets caught on stuff when you get to close to something, it may bring a little pain because the tie is tight enough to hold to your finger. You see that is like His Word. You can’t forget it, if you do there are little nudges that remind you, if you get to close to sin or temptation it’ll catch you up and remind you right from wrong, and even at times cause you pain, because it is The GREAT teacher of all times.

He made you as you are. He understood every hurt, heartache, failure, pain and victory that has come and will come into your life, yet His Word still says:

“But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. Once you were not a people, but now you are the people of God; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy. Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul. Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.”(1 Peter 2:9–12)

“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28–30)

” But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me.” (2 Corinthians 12:9 (NIV)

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:6–7)

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” ~ (Isaiah 41:10)

There are so many beautiful scriptures perfectly written for not so perfect people. Stop comparing yourself, stop worrying what other’s think and start allowing the scriptures to burn within your heart today, revealing just who Jesus is to YOU, specifically. He loves you.

Someone asks a question…..I sing because I am happy, I sing because I am free….because I know He watches me! Just as Jesus was concerned about his friends, he found them, he spoke with them and he stayed with them until they believed, until they got back on track, until fear was eliminated, He is concerned about us. I want to tie the scriptures around my neck, the ribbon around my finger, the Words upon my heart, so that His Words burn within me so bright to keep me going and to strengthen others. He watches over us. He’s always meeting us where we are at, reminding us of who He is. If you’re looking for a “word”, go back, read that great book and allow those words to burn within you so that you may hold on, return back, rebuild your faith.

Deuteronomy 31:8 – And the LORD, he [it is] that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

Deuteronomy 31:6 – Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he [it is] that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.
